AVATARES

CIEDix and the Educational Technology Research Group (TECNOEDUC), within the framework of the agreement signed between the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training and the University of Santiago de Compostela, are carrying out the pilot study of the AVATARES project in collaboration with the Hospital Classroom of the University Hospital Complex of Santiago de Compostela (AHCHUS).

This project constitutes a pedagogical initiative aimed at the design and validation of a methodology to improve the educational support provided to students with chronic or long-term illnesses through the use of robotic avatars.

Robotic avatars are conceived as telepresence systems integrated into the mainstream classrooms of hospitalized students, enabling them to connect remotely in real time. Through these devices, students can follow classroom activities, interact with teachers and peers, and participate in the regular development of educational activities.

This pilot experience is being implemented with Primary Education students linked to AHCHUS, in coordination with their respective mainstream schools.

Objectives

  • To assess the impact of the use of robotic avatars on students’ emotional and social well-being, as well as on their sense of belonging.

  • To analyze their contribution to reducing isolation during periods of hospitalization or convalescence.

  • To facilitate educational continuity and student participation through telepresence systems.

  • To determine the feasibility of this technology as a resource for educational inclusion in hospital and/or home-based educational support contexts.
